On 27 March 2002 the bulk carrier La Pampa grounded in the Auckland channel when her steering gear failed on leaving the Clinton Loading Berth in Gladstone Harbour. The three tugs which had assisted the La Pampa to unberth were recalled to assist in refloating the vessel. The plaintiffs were the owners of the tugs, and they claimed salvage remuneration.
